ABOUT BUGIS

OVERVIEW

The Bugis yacht offers a highly sustainable sailing experience through Indonesia’s most renowned Komodo Islands and Raja Ampat, as well as experiences to some captivating and lesser-known archipelagos including the Banggai Archipelago–home to the Bajau people a.k.a “Sea Nomads.

Taking her name from the Bugis shipwrights who crafted her, Bugis is a 27 meter wooden liveaboard that combines sustainability with modern amenities, providing guests with a comfortable, eco-conscious and authentic journey through Indonesia.

Bugis emphasises slow, eco conscious travel and meaningful connections with nature and local cultures.

With just 4 cabins on board, the Bugis is ideal for private charters for groups of up to 8-10 guests or intimate shared trips with a handful of other likeminded fellow adventurers seeking a slow and rewarding travel experience that both limits their impact on the environment through a reduced carbon footprint and bringing benefits to local communities.

All proceeds from Bugis voyages are channelled directly into the management and protection of Marine Protected Areas in Indonesia, creating meaningful benefits for the environment and surrounding communities. Bugis holds exclusive access to far-flung islands, making it possible for you to partake in village tours, hikes, treks, and cultural journeys, each activity a thread in the fabric of slow travel.

The emphasis on slow travel and deliberately flexible itineraries offers charter clients the freedom to engage with destinations and activities that mean the most to them.

LIFE ON BOARD
Bugis’ design emphasises spacious, open areas that foster a sense of unity with the natural surroundings. By relying on solar-powered electricity whenever the boat is not navigating, Bugis truly enjoys a serene ambiance, peaceful sunset drinks, and quiet nights.

The shared guest areas have been thoughtfully arranged to maximise panoramic vistas. The main deck features a shaded, open-air lounge for relaxation and casual dining (total 30sqm), drinks, and leisure activities such as board games.

Ascend to the upper deck, and you’ll find a more expansive 45sqm area complete with a bar, a versatile space perfect for yoga, unwinding, soaking up the sun, and more.

ACCOMMODATION
On the main deck, four generously sized cabins are each thoughtfully designed to ensure your comfort with expansive windows, views and natural light. Each accommodates two guest who can choose to share the double bed or utilise the upper berth – also perfect for accommodating a family and child.

Each has an en-suite bathroom, a ceiling fan, a desk, reading lights, and abundant storage space.

Please note that the Bugis yacht does not have air conditioning onboard. However, rest assured that the cabins are crafted with excellent insulation to provide a comfortable and ventilated environment. Enjoy plenty of natural light streaming in through the large windows, creating a bright and airy ambiance..

Why Bugis opts for non air-conditioned cabins
The 4 cabins on the boat are located on the main deck, not below deck. The sea breeze keeps the median temperature on board approximately 3 degrees Celsius cooler than on land. Th Boat’s architectural concept prioritizes open areas, allowing guests to connect with the elements. Air-conditioned cabins, in contrast to fan-cooled ones, require quilts, closed doors, and windows, which we find unusual for enjoying the tropics.

Additionally, air-conditioners rely on refrigerant gas and extra fuel from the generator, which contradicts our commitment to the environment.

LOCALLY SOURCED DINING
Each meal onboard is a curated experience, featuring the freshest local market ingredients combined to create a blend of Indonesian and Western cuisine. Each day’s meal prepared by a professionally trained local chef, with a flexible menu based on availability of produce at local markets (there is no imported meat on board).

SUSTAINABILITY PRACTICES
Bugis strives to keep their carbon and ecological footprint as low as possible and are equipped with an expansive solar array and significant battery storage. They prioritise the use of solar energy (over generators) at anchor. Their environmental dedication is further highlighted by the absence of airconditioners, which prevents the emission of ozone-harming gases.

Bugis embraces local sourcing which also delivers added benefits to the communities they visit. Other sustainable initiatives include purchasing local produce at community markets, and employing local services for laundry and guided tours.

OCEAN AND COMMUNITY COMMITMENT
Through the founder and main shareholder, Nomad Plastic, Bugis actively engages local communities to educate them and launch waste collection programs to address the major issue of plastic waste. Through Blue Alliance, Bugis invests in the regeneration of nature and improving the lives of local communities.

All proceeds are channeled to support effective Marine Protected Areas co-managed by Blue Alliance in the Banggai region of Indonesia
