Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo)

The island of Borneo is divided into three parts, each administered by separate countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei. Kalimantan is the Indonesian part of the island covering the southern two thirds of over 540,000 square kilometres

Kalimantan’s 130 million year old rainforest is older than the Amazon, and home to a rich variety of plant and animal species, including the iconic orangutan, proboscis monkeys, and hornbills.

The indigenous Dayak people are the largest ethnic group in the region and are known for their distinctive traditional houses and intricate wood carvings. They have a deep connection with the land and the forests and have developed sustainable farming practices that help to preserve the region’s natural environment.

BORNEO OFFERS ADVENTURES THAT WILL ENRICH YOUR SOUL

Visit one of the many rehabilitation centres that provide unique opportunities to get up close and personal with the orangutans.
Highlights
Wonder at these free-roaming Orangutans in their natural habitat, with almost guaranteed sightings in Tanjung Putting National Park, home to the world's largest population of wild orangutans. Borneo orangutans, distinguishable by their reddish-brown fur, large size, and long arms, are one of only two species of orangutans in the world. Experience the best of Tanjung Putting National Park by boarding a Klotok, a river houseboat, and cruising along the Sekonyar River, stopping at the ranger stations along the way. Camp Leaky, a renowned research facility within the national park, provides an opportunity to meet wildlife researchers, interact with orangutans, and learn about conservation efforts.
Trek through the dense rainforests of Tanjung Puting National Park and see the orangutans in their natural habitat.
Sleep on an open air klontok as you cruise the Sekonyer River. Spot the wildlife along the riverbanks.
Visit a Dayak village (kampung) and experience their rich cultural heritage and unique way of life.
Dive or snorkel in the crystal clear waters of Derawan Islands and witness the vibrant marine life.
Stay in a traditional longhouse and learn about the Dayak's way of life and sustainable farming practices.
