Sulawesi

Sulawesi Island is a tropical paradise located in the heart of Southeast Asia, situated between Borneo to the West, Philippines to the North, Maluka to the East and Flores and Timor to the South. As the world’s eleventh largest island and the fourth largest in Indonesia, and with over 6000km of coastline and more than a hundred offshore islands, Sulawesi has much to offer.

The uniqueness of Sulawesi is in the beautiful beaches, the magnificent mountain area, traditions and cultural diversity, and one of the finest marine parks in the world, Bunaken National Park. Bunaken National Park teems with marine life such as stingrays, sea turtles and dolphins. Intermediate and advanced divers will enjoy the steep walls and occasionally strong currents.

Sulawesi is renowned for its far-flung regions, where ancient and mysterious cultures thrive and continue to be preserved to this day. From the unique customs of the Toraja people in Tana Toraja to the traditional seafaring way of life in the Bajau communities, the island offers a captivating glimpse into Indonesia’s diverse cultural heritage.

TANA TORAJA - ONE OF THE MOST INTRIGUING CULTURAL EXPERIENCES

The Toraja people are known for their elaborate funeral ceremonies, intricate traditional houses, and distinctive burial sites which include elaborate cliff graves and hanging graves.
Highlights
Sulawesi regions to explore include: Southern Sulawesi (including the unique culture of Tana Toraja), South East Sulawesi (hinterland and diving including Wakatobi), Central Sulawesi (off the beaten path) and Northern Sulawesi (including Bunaken National Park, Lembeh Strait, and Bangka and Gangga islands).
Tick off species from your macro diving ‘hit list’ with a muck dive, day or night, at Lembeh Strait.
Spot a dugong feeding amongst the seagrass beds at Bangka Island (if you are lucky!).
Enjoy a bonfire on a white sandy beach.
Take a trip to Tangkoko National Park on the mainland in South Sulawesi, in search of black crested macaques and spectral tarsiers.
Be amazed at the hanging tau tau effigies, burial caves, and animistic villages of Tana Toraja.
Spend time with the ‘walking dead’ in Toraja.
